The Roost Creative Scholarship is one of the initiatives I’m most proud of spearheading this year! We’re giving one emerging creative the opportunity to benefit from 12 months in an inspired shared co-working space, mentoring, funds towards their pursuits and an showcase at the end of it all to launch them into the professional community.
I am in a unique position to leverage communities and networks to make creative ideas happen. It’s not an easy job but it is an exciting one. There are a lot of unknowns as well as constant change. I do my best to arm myself with the best people and tools around because let me tell you – it’s not a one gal gig. Another thing I try and do as often as possible is get out of town to see what other cities do and how they harness their creativity. Cue REMIX Academy event on the Sunshine Coast.
I have three iconic and highly visible events happening in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie over the next four months. Sporting, Cultural and Social Cause. They will each attract audiences numbering 20,000+ who are exceptionally engaged and fit specific demographics.
An 8ft high mural depicting the face behind the urban renewal of inner city Newcastle has been unveiled on Market Square, in the heart of Hunter Street Mall. Pakistani artist Shehzar Abro and creative collective The Roost are behind the initiative that pays tribute to the founder of Renew Newcastle, Marcus Westbury. The artwork adorns the face of a heritage building that is home to The Roost and newly opened Newcastle Transport office.
Happy International Women’s day to all the #girlbosses out there who are strong and fierce, compassionate and reflective. As much as we are equal to our male counterparts, we are undeniably different at times when it comes to our approach in the workplace.
Beaumont St Carnivale will be held on Sunday 12 March 2017 from 10am to 5pm along Beaumont Street between Tudor and Donald Streets with an additional entertainment zone in the Gallipoli Legion Club laneway featuring big bands, swing and jazz performances.

A beautiful and powerful reminder of living in the moment and treating our lives with a sense of playfulness. We don’t listen to music to seek the end of a song, just like we don’t dance to arrive at a certain point in the room – we simply dance to enjoy dancing.
UK import Rebecca Stern has always been creative but knew that her creativity was best when it was shared. A graduate of Brighton University’s Critical Fine Art Practice, she travelled to India before settling in Australia with her young son. A tutorial on stamping herb names on spoons inspired “House of Bec” – a collection of vintage silver plated cutlery brought to life by stamping inspiring, funny and sentimental messages on them. Her range then extended to silver floristry, using casts of real succulents to capture nature’s fleeting designs into wearable pieces of jewellery.
REMIX Global Summits tackle the big ideas shaping the future of the arts, the creative economy and creative cities. Designed as a forum where creative leaders from different sectors can exchange insights, ideas and work together towards common goals, the Asia Pacific chapter, held in Sydney in June of this year, delivered on its promise. Speakers for 2015 included Twitter, Virgin, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Etsy, Yahoo!7, MCA, Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian, Intel, Australian Museum, The Guardian, Google, ACMI, Foxtel, Westfield and Blippar, however the audience members were just as inspiring.
